It always seems that whenever I jump high and then try and spin I either don't get enough spin and just land a 360 or I'll spin too much and land smack on my ass. But when I try and stay low and spin fast my front wheels hit the ground or something and fall. I tried on a quarter-pipe, but I never was much of a vert skater.

Whadd'ya guys do to nail your 540's and 720's??

They way I learned was I put a little launch ramp next to some grass, and spin as fast as I can untill I had the feeling for it.

1. Concentrate on height, not distance. Use initial rolling inertia to propel forward so that you can use all you leg power to move upward.

2. Twist body and arms prior to launch and rotate using upperbody spin, not leg spin. If you do this correctly, you legs will follow your body and you upper torso is always gonna out control your lower body parts. Wind up like a top.

3. Keep legs and knees tucked as far under your body as possible, this will help mantain control while your spinning. To decelerate your spin, kick your legs and arms out.

4. Always keep your knees partially bent to help absorb impact on landing. Landing properly is not a foot thing, its a knee thing. NEVER land with your knees straight, this is the worst thing you can do.

5. Like mentioned eariler, practice on grass. Also, try it with some shoes on to get the mechanics of the spin first. The boots can add some lower body weight which can throw off the centrifugal forces acting against the top half of your body. Therefore, its easier to practice without the extra weight until your used to the mechanics. Hope this helps!

And practice moving backwards first. Its easier to land in the direction your heading then backwards.

The way I learned...try jumping and spinning while standing still on skates, since you'll have to land on them anyway. Wind the body a bit in the opposite direction of your spin (try doing your natural rotation first), then unwind and spin, jumping at the correct time. You should be able to throw down some 450s at first, if you're decent at landing 360s After you can land 540s while not rolling, try doing them off of a step or very small ledge. Perhaps the extra vertical distance will help a bit.

As for doing fakie 540s, if you're comfortable doing fakie 360s, and you're like me, you'll accidentally do some fakie 450s and bust your ass, the realize you can push a bit further and land a fakie 540.

Also, practice on trampolines.

You'll be surprised how much a trampoline helps.

Tramps are too much fun to bounce around on. You sometimes forget why you started.

Aha! So thats how all you people learn misty flips so fast without cracking your head open! Too bad I was never lucky enough to get a trampoline.

Well I got a 540 about 2 times out of every 6 attemps thanks to you guys. And almost got a fakie 540 into the rock bed (FYI: there's no grass here, just rock beds).

That works too. Just so long as you have something soft to land in.
