Red face question for old schoolers

My friend jake who used to blade back in the 90`s said that soul plates were much smaller compared to the new school super wide style.
Do you think the way skates are made now are making things easier and more versatile? Or are the ways of the past better?

hmmm...

Default Soulplates

Depending on the skates, but many are much wider...Yes.

I think it is easier to get on and stay on ledges with a wider soul. There are still oldies around like the Roces M12 and the K2 Fatty with more sleek designs.

Just a preference really....

Yeah skates increased in soul plate size over the years. I skate custom 2" wide UHMW souls on my K2s. Soul plate width really depends on personal preference though. I wouldn't necessarily say that wider souls are making things easier because I find it difficult to lock onto ledges with the wide souls but cess slides are a lot easier for me with the 2" souls. Things have changed a lot since the early days, wheels have gotten smaller, UFS came into play, boots now have "real" soul plates, the elimination of grind plates, the list goes on.

I like to make my skates as light as possible so I don't like big soul plates.
