How to Size a Hockey Neck Guard

Learn how to properly fit a hockey neck guard for optimal coverage and protection against skate blade lacerations
Updated December 2023

Finding the correct hockey neck guard size is quite a simple process but one that ensures you'll have the correct coverage and optimal fit. Neck guards are built with Velcro adjustability that helps cater to a variety of neck sizes. To start, measure the circumference of your neck using a soft measuring tape, string, or shoelace.

If you are in between two neck guard sizes, it's best to choose the one that offers the most coverage without being loose and can stay firmly secured against the neck without restricting your range of motion.

How to Check if it Fits Correctly

Proper Fit

The neck guard should fit snugly and against the neck without limiting any range of motion. It should also offer complete coverage to the throat and if you have a bib style, it should come down to the upper chest. Once properly fitted, the neck guard should sit comfortably on the body without being able to move or slide around.

Improper Fit

The neck guard is too small if it doesn't stay secured when on the neck via or if the neck guard causes choking or restricted range of motion.

The neck guard is too large if it's loose and slides around with ease at its shortest adjustment. This causes a gap in protection and will not provide sufficient coverage.
